Yesterday, United to End Genocide President Tom Andrews joined Congressman Frank Wolf in a press conference highlighting the escalating crisis in Sudan.

Tom demanded that President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton act immediately to address the humanitarian emergency in the Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile regions of Sudan and end Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir’s brutal attacks against civilians. As Tom stated:

We remember the tragedy of Darfur. It was only when hundreds of thousands of people began to die that the world took notice and took action. The question now is, how many are going to be required to die in the Nuba Mountains before we take the requisite action?

It is unacceptable that Bashir is using food as a weapon, but it is equally unacceptable that the United States government has failed to take action despite months of warnings. Tom called on President Obama and Secretary Clinton to demand that Bashir immediately end the blockade of the Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile and allow international humanitarian aid; expedite the pre-positioning of food in coordination with the international community; and demand that Bashir end the bombing without delay.

Tom also highlighted the upcoming March 16th day of action to Stop Sudan’s Weapons of Mass Starvation. Learn more about how you can get involved.

Sudan’s campaign of mass starvation is threatening the lives of 500,000 innocent men, women and children. Families will run out of food beginning in March.
