Events can be a powerful tool to bring the community together. Events can be used to shine a spotlight on an atrocity, educate your communities, get volunteers out, or build deeper ties between activists.
STEP 1: BEFORE YOU START
Define your goal. Why do you want to hold an event? What is the purpose of your event? Establishing a specific goal in the beginning stages of your planning will ensure a more focused and successful event. Choosing your target audience can help narrow your mission and goal. Most events related to mass atrocities have one or more of these goals:
- Media Coverage
Make adjustments. As you plan and execute your event, look back at your goals to make sure that your event will meet those goals. If your goals need to be adjusted, discuss adjustments with your event committee.
STEP 2: CHOOSE AN EVENT
Decide on a type of event. Think about how the different types of events would help you accomplish your goal. Events are about bringing people together. Different types of events can be large or small, but when it comes to grassroots action, the more people the better. Here is a list of possible events:
- Rallies, Marches and Vigils
- Movie Screenings
- Fundraising Events
- Lobbying Events
Organize an event committee. Running an event alone can be very difficult, so it’s important to recruit others to help. Recruit as many friends, family and community members as possible to your event committee, but make sure that there is a core group of people responsible for the main planning components of the event. Designate a chair person for the event who can be in charge of making executive decisions through the planning process.
STEP 3: PROMOTE YOUR EVENT
Get the word out! There are many ways to publicize your event. Write emails to friends and neighbors telling them about your event. Ask people to RSVP for your event online via Facebook. Ask your school, place of worship, and any other organization you are a part of to help you publicize your event. Post flyers in your community and make announcements at community events and online through email listserves and social media to let everyone know about your event. STEP 4: FOLLOW UP
Just because your event is over doesn’t mean you’re done! The follow up is an important part of the event planning process. Evaluate the success of the event and think about what you could have done differently, so if you plan a future event, you can do so more efficiently. Have attendees sign in so you can invite them to future events. Be sure to thank people who helped with the planning process and maintain those relationships.
