United to End Genocide welcomed President Obama’s appointment of Ambassador Donald Booth as Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan. Tom Andrews, President of United to End Genocide, stated:

“The appointment of a Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan fills a major gap in the U.S. government’s ability to protect civilians and prevent atrocities in both countries. Ten years after the genocide in Darfur began, millions remain displaced and we are seeing a renewed escalation of violence in the region. Sudanese government attacks on civilians have spread from Darfur to other parts of the country, severely affecting another million people in South Kordofan and Blue Nile. South Sudan faces its own challenges of governance and troubling reports of atrocities in Jonglei state. And tensions between Sudan and South Sudan continue to threaten a return to war.”

“Ambassador Booth’s familiarity with key regional players will be an asset to multilateral efforts to address the core problems facing the Sudans. However, the envoy can only be as strong as the overall policy approach, which requires clear, verifiable demands for civilian protection, an end to human rights abuses, unhindered humanitarian access, and a comprehensive approach to the multiple crises in the Sudans.”

“Accountability must also be ensured for all those found responsible for severe human rights abuses, starting with President Bashir and others who are wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of genocide.  Ambassador Booth’s appointment is an encouraging sign of President Obama’s renewed commitment toward lasting peace in the two Sudans. United to End Genocide looks forward to working with him on those efforts.”
