United to End Genocide has no openings right now.

United to End Genocide is changing the way the United States and the international community responds to the world's worst crime by empowering individuals and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide. Internships are available for undergraduate, graduate students or recent graduates who are available for at least 20 to 40 hours per week for duration of at least 2-3 months. Internship Program Areas include:

  • Communications and Digital Strategy Internship
  • Development Internship
  • Policy / Government Relations Internship

Communications and Digital Strategy Internship

The Communications and Digital Strategy department is responsible for the organization's media relations, campaign and messaging development, marketing and online communications. This internship offers an opportunity to learn a variety of tactics and skills used in traditional and new-media strategies, from drafting press releases to creating online videos. This is a great opportunity for a motivated individual that is passionate about preventing and ending genocide and mass atrocities worldwide and wants to gain first hand knowledge of non-profit communications.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Draft blogs, emails, press releases and other communications documents
  • Build and maintain media lists
  • Monitor major media outlets and track relevant media mentions
  • Manage posts on social media accounts and keep content consistent, relevant and updated. Assist in measuring analytics
  • Grow and deepen supporter relationships through social media and email
  • Assist with online campaign development
  • Proofread various materials including email alerts, blogs and reports

Helpful Experience:

  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills
  • Social media experience in a professional capacity
  • Experience with Photoshop and video editing software a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and online digital tools
  • Passion for ending mass atrocities throughout the world

Development Internship

The Development Intern will work closely with the executive team and development staff to create strategic and innovative fundraising campaigns and to implement and manage internal administrative systems. This internship provides a fantastic opportunity for a student to gain practical, hands-on experience in one of the most crucial functions of the nonprofit sector.

Development interns participate in every aspect of a dynamic, multi-faceted development operation, including online fundraising, direct mail, major donor outreach, foundation cultivation, and event planning. Interns receive extensive training in common fundraising approaches and tactics, including the use of Salesforce CRM, Convio Luminate and Foundation Directory Online and participate in professional development opportunities.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Maintain development database entry and system management. Intern will leave with working knowledge of Salesforce.com and Convio Luminate
  • Research to identify prospective foundation, corporate and individual supporters using common development industry tools and tactics. Strategize with development team on best outreach and cultivation methods
  • Support donation entry and tracking process. Draft donor acknowledgments and other correspondence to cultivate relationships with high-level donor and foundation supporters
  • Seek out, implement and manage small-scale development campaigns. Advise grassroots fundraising with material support
  • Provide support on grant management, including foundation research, meeting preparation, proposal and report tracking and submission, and foundation officer relations
  • Analyze donation metrics and report back to the team on donor trends in direct mail, online and major gift giving
  • Become familiar with all programmatic aspects of the organization and be able to respond to inquiries about the organization and the fundraising operation

Helpful Experience:

  • Passion for human rights, international relations, advocacy, fundraising, nonprofit management, and/or organizational development
  • Previous experience in fundraising, grant writing, research and/or advocacy
  • An excellent verbal and written command of English. Strong online research skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including mail merge tools and Excel formulas
  • Experience with a CRM data management system highly desirable

Policy/Government Relations Internship

The Policy Department of United to End Genocide seeks a highly motivated and independent college student, recent graduate, graduate student to assist with research and policy initiatives. In the past, the Policy Intern has conducted research on a variety of issues, including treaties and emerging conflicts, attended congressional hearings and expert meetings, and assisted in the creation of a comprehensive risk assessment and conflict classification model that is to be used by the larger organization. The Intern will also synthesize news sources coming out of conflict areas around the world.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Monitor news and synthesize media reports on areas of concern for the team.
  • Blogging for United to End Genocide's website
  • Long-term research projects on various armed conflicts where civilians are being targeted on a disproportionately large scale
  • Regular conflict monitoring and analysis to assist research associates with determining United to End Genocide's involvement in emerging conflicts
  • Attend meetings on behalf of the Policy Team

Helpful Experience:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences
  • Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are essential, and experience using Microsoft Excel and editing web content is particularly helpful
  • Interest and experience in human rights advocacy is desirable, particularly related to genocide, mass atrocities, the conflicts in Sudan, Syria, Burma and other areas of concern
  • Relevant coursework is highly desirable
  • Familiarity with the U.S. legislative process and foreign policy in particular are helpful
  • Professional, well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable
  • Arabic and / or French knowledge is a plus
