For the past six years, STAND has operated as the student-led division of a parent organization, first the Genocide Intervention Network and then United to End Genocide. Now STAND has moved forward as an independent organization.

This is an incredible time to be a STAND student, and an exciting time for STAND as a national organization. As the only student-led organization dedicated to the prevention of mass atrocities, STAND empowers students in a way that few other organizations do. STAND students have played an essential role in this movement, as advocates, as policy experts, as organizers, and as leaders. The transition to an independent, self-sustaining organization will enable students to have an even stronger voice in the future of genocide prevention.

Today, STAND has grown into a far-reaching network of over 100 chapters at schools around the globe. STAND has broadened its purpose to creating a sustainable student-led network that actively fights genocide wherever it may occur.

STAND recruits, trains, organizes and mobilizes students – providing materials, educational information, online resources, policy expertise, leadership training and a network of concerned and active peers.

STAND has trained thousands of student leaders, preparing them to be the next generation of thought leaders, policy experts and officials, top-notch organizers and innovative change-makers. Through four national conferences, 12 regional conferences, 10 chapter- hosted summits, 3 STAND Camps, and ongoing retreats and training for its core decision making body, STAND has trained seven generations of student leaders in everything from tactics and strategy to Twitter advocacy.

Building the Movement – from Campus to Community

STAND students are vital members of United to End Genocide’s core grassroots activist network. STAND’s leadership team is building out a strong nationwide student movement and creating innovative tactics and ‘buzz’ that garner media attention, sound the alarm on emerging atrocities and deliver our key messages to Capitol Hill.

United to End Genocide is committed to making sure the anti-genocide movement is greater than the sum of its parts. That’s why we work to help connect STAND student leaders with other key voices including faith leaders, members of End Genocide Survivors, our unique and growing network of genocide and mass atrocity survivors, and activists in the End Genocide Network, our program to empower hundreds of emerging anti-genocide leaders in communities across the United States.

Developing Leaders to End Genocide

STAND is creating a generation of strong leaders committed to building a permanent movement to prevent genocide. These students are emerging as leaders in public policy, organizing and directly influencing key decisions related to genocide prevention and mass atrocity response.

Each year, outgoing student leaders select 10-15 college and high school students to join STAND’s Managing Committee, which provides overall leadership for STAND. STAND also develops Core Chapter Leaders on 50 campuses. These students – identified as particularly committed and motivated organizers – receive tailored  training, resources and responsibilities as part of the STAND Leadership Team.

United to End Genocide provides training and support for STAND’s student leaders, hosting STAND leadership camps, organizer training sessions and Capitol Hill Lobby Days.
